Prejudice isn’t attractive

Today I got a query that was extremely Islamophobic: Muslims attack the rest of the world and our American everyman must save the earth and destroy the Muslims.

I’ve also received queries that have racist, sexist, homophobic/biphobic, ableist, xenophobic, or transphobic undertones. The problem isn’t the query: the problem is the book. If you’ve written something with prejudice, even unconscious prejudice, it shows.

These queries all get rejections.

It’s all the more painful for me if you’re an otherwise good writer. You may have previous publishing credits; you may have won awards. It doesn’t matter. We won’t represent a prejudiced book. Bring us something without those elements and things will be different.
